It’s sunny. It’s hot. I’m tired of shopping, I want some adventure. I want to do what the locals do.
These are all good reasons to go kayaking around Annapolis!
First book your stay with the Flag House Inn for a relaxing couple of days ….
Lacking our own kayak (for now), we’ve sampled the 3 nearby locations where you can rent a kayak, they are all reasonable ($20-$30/ hr) and you can have a great relaxing paddle out on the water. It’s very peaceful though at the front of Spa Creek/ Annapolis harbor, you are better off paddling on a weekday as weekends can be quite busy. btw, there have been a number of accidental drownings as seems to sadly happen every year – BE SURE TO WEAR A LIFE PRESERVER !
So let’s review the 3 locations:
- Back side of Spa Creek (quieter, less traffic) – See Kate & team at Kayak Annapolis, located at Truxtun park about 15 minutes drive away. This is a great spot for a beginner or someone who wants a quieter ride on smoother water. The back side of Spa Creek is mostly residential and there is less boat traffic… There are many small creeks to explore. You can paddle the whole perimeter on that side of the Spa Creek Bridge in less than 2 hours. Or be more aggressive and go all the way out to the harbor….
- Front side of Spa Creek (Annapolis harbor, Ego Alley, all of Spa Creek… and beyond) – for more of an open water experience, try “ACK” Annapolis Canoe & Kayak – They are walking/water taxi distance. The shop and launch dock are nearby in Eastport, they can set you up in either a kayak (single/tandem) or SUP… From there you can launch and cover a lot of ground. They have a bit of parking on site but you are better to walk / take water taxi to get there
- Quiet Waters Park – see our blog post from last summer – it’s a 15 minute drive to this lovely park, on a creek running into the South River, a more major body of water similar to the Severn. Kayaking (concession supplied by Paddle or Pedal) can be combined with a picnic, hike, and a stroll around the gardens as well
- SUP – Capital SUP on Back Creek (10 min drive) does both kayak & Stand Up Paddleboard (SUP) and is highly rated… we did a paddle in summer 2020, in Back Creek you will see a lot of boats as back creek is loaded with marinas! You can paddle out to mouth of back creek for great view of Bay Bridge.
