Here’s a running commentary on what’s new and interesting around the Flag House Inn.
Oct 12 – Hello diary, it’s been awhile, hasn’t it? 🙂 – we have a LOT to catch up on:
- We remodeled the Water Witch room and it’s now the Chesapeake room – very contemporary
- We closed for several weeks during the “dark period” of Covid
- We then significantly reconfigured operations inside the Inn to meet CDC guidelines and industry best practices, such as running an air purifier, washing all bedspreads for each guest, individual coffee pots etc
- Since mid June we have been quite busy and enjoyed amazing reviews from our guests
- To top it all off we were named by Trip Advisor as a “Traveler’s Choice” lodging, given to only the top 10% of properties in the world
- We are now in a position to plan out further investments in the property
Mar 6 – Off season means two things – vacation and improvements! And we have been doing both, beach vacation with family and ski trip with friends. Anyway, in last weeks, we also had entry carpets and runner cleaned (amazingly bright now), you’ll see us sporting special Flag House Inn shirts and we are making steady headway on the secret room remodel, we now have a new bed and have updated cornices… not ready yet for the big reveal!
Feb 20 – we’ve been at it again 🙂 New larger 32″ flat screen TV’s in smaller King rooms (Sailing Capital and Water Witch rooms), New custom pens too. Our “secret” room remodel continues but we’re not quite ready to announce anything 🙂
Feb 7, 2020 – We’ve had several projects going in the off season – we did a major insulation project – we had loads of blown in insulation added to attic, both crawl spaces insulated and also the rim joists where floorboards meet the foundation… it has felt significantly warmer and we are also re-learning how to set the heat as MUCH less heat escapes up through the attic.
Also we replaced the back door off the dining room with a much tighter fitting / double pane glass door, of course approved by the Historical Preservation Committee….the prior door appeared cut down for the space. Also we replaced a very leaky window in a spare room with a nice double pane wood window
Nov 15 – It’s slowing down a bit more during the week, so that leaves time for improvements – we’ve finished painting most everything we can reach outside, we have help coming for the high up stuff. Also we’ve swapped out most every light bulb for LED, nice and bright. We have several other great projects coming, we look forward to updating you when they’re done! Oh and the honey ginger baked pears are almost as popular as the summer time grilled peaches 🙂
Oct 30 – We have had wonderful fall weather, but we are starting to slow a bit. We have been continuing many little projects to refresh the rooms and exterior of the house – all first floor windows and some 2nd/3rd floor are repainted, brick foundation restored and painted, new toilets in some rooms
Sep 19 – we are in full swing for late summer/fall busy season, we are pretty much booked on weekends through the end of October, but we have lots of availability on weekdays and weekends in November and beyond. We have had a spectacular run of weather and it looks to hold at least the next 10 days…
Aug 26 – Well August went by fast – we had 2 breaks, for the first we had Susan the innsitter running everything while for the 2nd we shut down for a few days… Anyway, we are working on some new menu items and getting ready for the busy late summer/fall season!
Aug 2 – We’ve had a busy July, hosting many tourists, getaway couples, some overseas families, lacrosse tournament parent/child, and of course some Navy visitors, though it’s quiet over at the Yard during plebe summer (except for 630 am physical training to beat the heat). All our great visitors have one thing in common – they love our great location, included parking, delicious breakfasts and insightful recommendations on what to do!
July 2 – The bunting is up for the summer! We also added note pads, new Chesapeake Bay guide books (Prior ones were 15 years old!)
June 26 – It’s here! I-Day (Induction Day) for plebes at USNA… We recently saw our mid that we sponsor along with other rising sophomores (Youngsters as they’re called) and they all said how I day seemed so long ago although it was only a year. All the best to the class of 2023 as they start their journey tomorrow morning!
May 31 – We apologize for the long delay inn between updates, but we have been busy! Front porch was refreshed before Commissioning week, back decks stained and painted and the parking courtyard is not landscaped with many plantings…. We had many lovely families with us for Commissioning Week – see our posts on Instagram/Facebook for a summary..
April 23 – We’ve been heads down on many improvements and will have comprehensive blog soon – one example – we have replaced all our sheets with new Comphy brand sheets, the gold standard in hospitality industry, along with new blankets (though maybe they wont get used much until fall!) … Meanwhile the spring boat show is coming up this week, the boat trips are running and the water taxi service is running on weekends…. the season is upon us!
Apr 2 – Spring is here, and the Woodwind sailing/ Watermark harbor cruises are starting up! The Woodwind starts sailing next weekend!. At USNA, the noon lunch formation is back for the spring and formal Dress Parades are scheduled for many of the Fridays on Worden Field at 4p. Spring whites are around the corner and mids are stocking up on Shout Wipes to keep those uniforms clean :-).
Mar 18 – We “survived” the 2, yes 2 (!) St Patrick’s weekends. The weekend before St Patty’s is the big Annapolis St Patrick’s parade, it’s the biggest of the year and there was a great dock party before/after. This past weekend it was packed downtown all weekend, we were blessed with nice weather. We’ve been fairly busy, check our Instagram/Facebook for a few of the tasty dishes we have been serving up!
Feb 25 – it’s off season here so that means vacation time – we’ve been to a wedding in Ireland, skiing in Colorado and NYC weekend. We’ve been working on some improvements, shoveling snow and hosting many great groups on the weekend. Many USNA candidates – we hope to see all of them after they get accepted 🙂
Jan 8 2019 – It’s not too soon to start planning Valentine’s Day! We have a lot of availability at the Inn for both a one night stay on Thursday the 14th and also a 2 night stay for the weekend! Our blog will have a few ideas for you as well!
Jan 1 2019 – We closed out 2018 with a variety of guests, whether in town for the Military Bowl (Virginia Tech vs. Cincinnati) or to celebrate the New Year. In keeping with the typical 2018 weather it rained but everyone had a great time
Dec 22 2018 – Exciting news! Our parking courtyard expansion is complete, we added 3 feet of parking depth to the parking spots in back of the house. This makes a HUGE difference, and makes it much easier to navigate getting in and out of our property
Dec 10 – What a busy weekend with Midnight Madness shopping on Thursday, Army-Navy excitement, Governor’s mansion open house and Boat Parade! Our guests had a great time this past weekend. It will be quiet the next two weeks but we are using the downtime to work on a new web site, plan some improvements and look at some weatherizing….
Nov 28 – We are proud to announce that today we have been accepted into the Maryland Green Registry. We had to demonstrate that we are conducting best practices in our operations that minimize impact to the environment. Look for the logo to display shortly on our website
Nov 25 – The annual Illumination (tree lighting) took place tonight, signaling the start of the holiday season. Upcoming events include Midnite Madness (late shopping on Thursday nights) and Boat Parade on Saturday December 8. Book now and enjoy some great holiday shopping! We can help guide you with some great ideas on shopping around town, we are doing most of our Christmas shopping within walking distance of the Inn!
Nov 12 – In our own small way we are going more green – we are recycling all leftover soap and shampoo and sending to an organization that recycles them and creates Hygiene kits, which are distributed in the US and all over the world….
October 27 – more great feedback from our guests: “Our get-away days in Annapolis were great fun. We were so pleased with our stay at Flag House Inn. The house was beautifully decorated and very comfortable. Parking on the premise was very valuable. Marty and Carmel made every effort to accommodate any and all of our needs. Their house was a very short walk to the center of town and a walk across the street to the Naval Academy. Our breakfast was absolutely delicious with homemade everything! We would highly recommend The Flag House Inn if you are visiting Annapolis. Sue and Chuck. New Jersey”
Oct 22 – Our guests have been loving our fall fruit special, spiced apples. Our friendly farm stand has been supplying some lovely cooking apples. See our instagram @flaghouseinn for some pics
Oct 16 – We’ve been quiet here because we have been so busy with the boat shows and lots of visitors. We continue to get great feedback, see this email we got today: ” I just want to thank you and your wife for a memorable weekend. The rooms were very nice and the breakfast absolutely delicious. They were better than the ones I have had on a cruise. You made us feel right at home. We couldn’t have been more pleased. My husband & I will be coming in the spring. Thanks again. Luann”
Sep 25 – More progress! We had a vent cut through the wall on 3rd floor between the 2 houses to improve air flow, especially in the summer, this should reduce the high hallway temps on the #24 side in the summer and balance the heat in the winter.
Sep 24 – A major milestone today as we signed a contract with a landscape contractor to add 3′ of depth to the parking courtyard. When that is done we’ll add a custom built shed and finish it off with trees/shrubs to give a nice enclosed feeling. Done by spring . And of course in compliance with the Historical Preservation Committee (we’ve got 6 permit applications to show for it!)
Sep 19 – We get a lot of “thru trippers” especially on weekdays, people on a road trip visiting just Annapolis or a number of cities. They are always receptive to our recommendations and often discover a lot of the charm of Annapolis on their own. Here’s a nice email we got today from one such couple, Lee & Don B who stayed with us last week :
” Dear Carmel and Marty, Don and I can’t thank you enough for making our stay last week so enjoyable! You have created a wonderful warm and inviting place for we travelers to stay, so much so that we hated to say goodbye! All your attention to every detail, be it the accommodations , the newspapers, the recommendations or the cuisine did not go unnoticed, and every day since we returned home, we wondered what was for breakfast!! You have set the bar high for any future B & B we may stay in! We hope to come your way again, and will look forward to staying at the Flag House and enjoying your wonderful hospitality! Best regards to you both,
We are so touched by all these messages and reviews. Our goal is simple: Give every guest a great and modern experience, set within our classic home….
Sep 11 – I was just over at the Navy Athletic department ticket office and they confirmed the football game is on for the weekend, no delays or postponement expected. “We’ve played in worse”…
Sep 5 – Are you ready for some football!? And some 2nd Class parents? We look forward to hosting many people over the next days especially for these 2 events. The menu is prepped and we are bringing on several new breakfasts such as Farm Stand Breakfast Bowl, featuring homemade pesto (with basil from our garden), fresh cherry tomatoes (also home grown), broccolinni, roasted potatoes, poached egg and more!
August 30 – We are back from a refreshing weekend away, we shut the inn down and headed to a music festival in southern VA, where we had some great wine, got some new breakfast ideas and heard some fantastic music (www.locknfestival.com) . Anyway we look forward to the many diverse people visiting for Labor Day weekend….
August 21 – More improvements on the way! Today we got a delivery of new clock radios, they will have 2 USB chargers and 2 electric plugs built into the clock… this will make it much easier for guests to charge their devices, we recognized there were limited plugs in each room….
August 13 – We are now recovered from Parent’s weekend, this is for USNA plebe (freshman) parents to visit their son/daugter after 6 weeks of plebe summer induction. We hosted 5 families plus met the parents of our own plebe we are sponsoring…. Our guests were very appreciative of our place and they are sharing this in social media…. This is a review received today in Trip Advisor:
“I stayed at this beautiful, romantic, charming Inn when my son was transitioning into the Naval Academy, which happens to be right across the street. It could not have been more convenient nor the owners, Carmel and Marty, more delightful or accommodating! Lovely rooms, free parking, one block to restaurants, shops and the waterfront and getting to events at the Naval Academy or having my son walk through the gate and across the street from the Academy to the Inn to join us was such a luxury as we did not have to drive onto the yard or find other parking.
The breakfast dining is fabulous with fresh fruit and gourmet dishes and all other amenities were provided such as umbrellas to borrow, books and newspapers to peruse, a mini fridge for keeping beverages and the front porch swing with the view was so relaxing. I’ve stayed twice when in Annapolis and will definitely make this my home away from home when visiting my son.”
August 3 – As earlier mentioned, we have upgraded the wi-fi in the house, getting a faster line and placing “booster pods” all over. We will be having guests try this out over the weekend before unhooking the old system… Yay!!
July 30 – we’ve had a surge in bookings the last few days and weekend nights until end of October are going fast. We do however have plenty of rooms for you on weekdays which are priced lower too….
July 29 – In addition to the rainy day tips we now have a little handout with our recommendations … we’ve met so many fellow business owners around town they have been so generous with their advice
July 23 – it’s been a bit wet (ok it’s been really soggy!) the last few days but that’s shouldn’t deter you from coming to stay with us – we have developed a one pager handout that we post/hand out to give some ideas what to do. Our guests the past few days have found plenty to do to stay occupied when it rains….
July 16 – Now that we are fully moved in and back from vacation we are working on improving your experience here at FHI – today we completed upgrades of all TV’s to HD signal. Next up – faster internet!
July 12 2018 – Summer is in full swing at the Flag House Inn. There is a lot going on in DTA (Downtown Annapolis), and we can recommend some great activities as well as our favorite eating and drinking spots. There’s free concerts, Dinner Under the Stars, and our favorite, Sailing Night on Wednesday nights with the Woodwind Schnooners
So book your summer stay and join the fun!
Don’t forget, when you stay with us, you get on site parking INCLUDED in your rate as well as INCLUDED hot/fresh cooked breakfast. At other downtown hotels that will cost you an extra 50-60 per night, so our rates include great value for your money.
