Our cherry trees in the backyard are budding which means spring is on the way. More importantly, though, are two major events in Annapolis that also portend the arrival of spring.
This upcoming Saturday, April 11, is the annual USNA vs. Army Lacrosse game. The game is being held at the Navy-Marine Corps Stadium (off of Rowe Blvd) here in Annapolis. For the many lacrosse enthusiasts in Maryland it is a great way to see two rivals challenge each other for the title of winner this year. The rivalry between Army & Navy is long standing in sports but once in the service of our country all of the young men playing in the game on Saturday will be brothers together as they stand for the freedom we cherish so dearly here in the USA. So, come out to the game and cheer them on as they battle on the playing field. The game begins at 1 PM and you can purchase tickets either on line or at the ticket stand off of Farragut Road.
Next weekend on Saturday, April 18, beginning at 1 PM you can watch the 33rd annual croquet match between our two local colleges – St. John’s College and the US Naval Academy – here in Annapolis. The event takes place on the front lawn of St. John’s College (on College Avenue) and will run until all the matches are completed and a winner is announced. St. John’s College is leading in the overall win category but the midshipmen have had some recent successes so this should be a great year to cheer your team on to victory. Bring a blanket, a picnic lunch or purchase refreshments locally to enjoy during the afternoon. This competition has been classified as one of the most unique intercollegiate sports in the USA so if you are in the vicinity do take the time to enjoy part or all of the festivities. The USNA midshipmen band plays during the matches so you can kick up your heels and have a dance or two amidst the fun.
